Ahwatukee Community Garden is considering building homes for Mason Bees as part of the Mason Bee Project. Mason Bees are native solitary bees that live alone, make a little home with mud, lay eggs, and have a 6 week life span. They do not sting or swarm. They are gentle. All the females are queens. We don't notice them as much as the European-introduced honeybees. The honeybees are having problems with Colony Collapse Disorder.
One way to make sure we have enough bees to pollinate our food crops is to become part of the Mason Bee Project. All the details are at this link!
Did you know that 400 female Mason Bees can pollinate an orchard that it would require 20,000 honey bees to pollinate?? Mason Bees belly flop into each flower and spread a lot more pollen faster and more efficiently than honey bees.
Ahwatukee Community Garden cares!
