Ahwatukee Community Garden 2024 Fall Newsletter
We are excited to kick off the Fall Season at Ahwatukee Community Garden with a series of hands-on, educational weekend workshops! With the cooler weather finally here, it’s time to dig in and enjoy the garden together.
Fall Workshops Are Here!
Join us on October 6th for our Children’s Workshop, open to all ages!
Activity: The first 15 children will receive a terra cotta flower pot to decorate and plant a seed to take home and watch grow. You’re welcome to bring your own pot or donate extras for others to use. It’s the perfect way to kick off fall with creativity and fun in the garden!
Date: October 6th
Time: 9-10 AM
Location: Ahwatukee Community Garden
Donations appreciated to support our community garden!
Composting Success & Environmental Impact
We’re celebrating a huge milestone—thanks to your dedication, we’ve collected over 2,500 lbs of veganic food scraps! Keeping these scraps out of landfills helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserves resources, and creates rich, natural compost for our plants, minimizing the need for chemical fertilizers. Your contributions have allowed us to produce over 20 five-gallon buckets of fresh compost for our fall garden. We couldn’t do it without the support of the Ahwatukee community—thank you for making a difference!
Join Our Community Compost Program!
Ready to reduce food waste and help the environment? Join our Community Compost Program and turn your kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost that helps our garden grow!
What We Offer:
FREE Food-Grade Buckets: Pick up a composting bucket every Sunday from 8-10 AM at the garden.
Collect Your Scraps: Gather veganic-only food scraps (plant-based and free of any animal products) to keep our compost healthy and sustainable.
Examples of Veganic Food Scraps:
Fruit and vegetable peels
Bread and grains
Coffee grounds and filters
Tea bags (without staples)
Nut shells
Non-dairy leftovers
What NOT to Include:
Meat, fish, or dairy
Oils or fats
Animal-based food scraps
Return & Renew: Bring your bucket every Sunday and exchange it for a clean one!
Benefits: Your veganic food scraps will be transformed into "black gold"—rich compost that improves the health of our garden and the environment.
Collaborations & Partnerships
The Orchard Learning Center: Unprocessed scraps are sent here to be turned into compost, which is then returned to enrich our garden.
Community Harvest Community Gardens: This partnership brings in additional resources and expertise for a more sustainable community.
Let’s Go Compost: This 501(c)(3) non-profit aims to make composting free and accessible across the U.S. Our goal is to revolutionize waste management, reduce landfill waste, and combat harmful greenhouse gas emissions. We support community-led programs for school and community gardens, ensuring composting resources reach everyone, regardless of location or income.
Get Involved & Volunteer!
Volunteering at Ahwatukee Community Garden is about more than just getting dirty—it’s about building friendships, learning new skills, and creating a healthier, more sustainable community. Join us every Sunday from 8-10 AM to lend a hand. We’re looking for volunteers to take on various roles, including:
Play live music
Lead yoga or reiki sessions
